Virtual Worship

Shhh, Virtual Worship is Starting

Opening Prayer:

Holy God, there is within us a deep desire to know you — to rest in your presence, to trust in your mercy, to feel your loving embrace envelope us. And, so it seems that we are always traveling. We rush to meet you here. No! You are there, and off we go. We become frantic in our searching, always hurrying, always harried, always left wanting and waiting. We have been running so fast for so long that we no longer remember what we are after. All the while, you wait patiently and quietly for us to return home. You have been with us all along, calling us, wooing us, guiding us. The voice we drowned out with the noise of our lives was you, but you have never stopped speaking. It is in worship, gracious God, that we are reminded to slow down, to be still and silent, and to listen. Thank you for this sacred time and space, and we ask that you make yourself known to us anew. For the sake of Christ we pray.   Amen.

SPEAKER: Pastor Carlton Rhoden of Westminster Presbyterian Church of Los Angeles

Opening Praise:

Prayers of the People:

God, we have not known how to use the gifts you have given us. At times, we have misused and abused your gifts, not knowing how to use them in a world where homelessness, pain, disease, injustices, and death affect young and old. We have not encouraged the downtrodden or the outcast of our societies. We continue to build bigger homes, drive fancier cars, and wear fine clothes at the expense of those who live below the poverty line. Forgive us for our lack of caring and sharing.

God, we have not known how to use the gifts you have given us. We have failed to share words of wisdom with our young – those words that let them know they have value and worth, those words that help those in prison know that, though they are locked out of our society, they are not locked out of God’s grace or mercy. Forgive us for not using our gifts to bless. God, we don’t want to be ignorant; so help us use the gifts you have given us in the spirit you gave them, to build your kingdom and your people.

In the name of Jesus, who taught us to pray:

Our Father, who is in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.  Amen.

Offering Prayer:

Generous God, we are reminded through scripture of the spiritual gifts that you give. We know that these are not for us to hold onto but are gifts for us to share – gifts from you meant for giving. As we offer our tithes and offerings, prompt us to commit more than dollars, but to see the gifts you have written on our hearts and to share generously of these as well! We pray these words in the name of Jesus, in whose way we follow, for whose love we are eternally grateful.  Amen.
