Shhh, Virtual Worship is Starting

Opening Prayer:

Merciful God, we embrace this season of Lent as we prepare again to walk with Jesus to the cross. Speak to us, we pray, the solemn truth of Christ’s passion. Remind us that there is no life without death, no communion without separation, no glory without suffering. Give us courage and faith to receive these difficult truths and to align our hearts and lives with them. May we choose to lose our lives so that we may gain them; to endure the pain of separation that we might enjoy the fellowship of all your saints; to enter Christ’s suffering by entering the suffering of your children on earth that we may one day share in your eternal glory. For the sake of Christ, we pray.

Amen.

SPEAKER: Pastor Carlton Rhoden of Westminster Presbyterian Church of Los Angeles

Prayers of the People:

Holy God, hear our prayers. We take great comfort in knowing that you see each one of us and know our deepest needs, and yet you have told us to come to you in prayer, and so we do so in humility and faith. God, some of us are sick — we ask for you to heal us. Some of us are without work — we ask that you would provide. Some of us can no longer see through our tears — heal our hearts. We are so grateful for the many beautiful blessings you have given us. We have not forgotten them. But we know that you are not unfamiliar with our sorrows, so we give them to you now. Take them and bring beauty from ashes as only you can.

Amen!

Offering Song

“Joyful joyful”

Offering Prayer:

Merciful God, we are surrounded by temptations to judge based on appearance, to live only skin-deep, to pursue what is flashy rather than what is substantive and to pattern our lives after the shallow values of the world. How we need a renewed vision of Christ this Lenten season! Speak to us again about what life in you is about: serving those who can offer nothing in return, loving those who are different or friendless, forgiving and reconciling with our enemies, trusting you rather than ourselves. We acknowledge that we cannot do this on our own but only by your Spirit. Come, Lord Jesus, and transform our hearts that we might reflect you in all we are and in all we think and do.

Amen.

CLOSING PRAYER

Send us forth on our Lenten journey.  Send us forth through the wilderness of our world.  As Moses gave the Hebrew people God’s symbol of forgiveness and hope, give to us, Lord, your spirit of forgiveness and grace.  Send us out through the desert moments of our lives, into the light and life of God’s new dawn.  Amen.
